Earlier this week, an NBC Olympics promo showed U.S. swimmer Missy Franklin and her parents celebrating her victory in the 100-meter breaststroke event.
“When you’re 17 years old and win your first gold medal, there’s nobody you’d rather share it with,” the network's voiceover said. The problem?
NBC hadn't actually shown Missy Franklin's win yet.
To be fair to the Peacock, it's very difficult to minimize spoilers during the day, given the 5-8 hour time difference between London and the U.S.
Events air live, but are also shown tape delayed in prime time in front of tens of millions of people, even though the results are already known.
Still, a major spoiler from the network itself led to such backlash - and even an #NBCFail trending hashtag on Twitter - that NBC apologized for it.
“Clearly that promo should not have aired at that time,” read the statement.
“We have a process in place and this will not happen again. We apologize to viewers who were watching and didn’t know the result of the race.”
It’s not just this one goof that has viewers irritated. Jon Stewart ripped NBC for cutting away from a key moment in the opening ceremonies
